The brainchild of writer Ayesha Harruna Attah, and journalist Nicolas Haque, The Pomegranate Book Club meets the first Thursday of every month. For Ayesha, whose favourite activity is to read, books have sent her travelling and changed her entire world. “Why not start a book club for teens and share that gift with them?” she thought, unsure where to begin. Nicolas’ late mother’s name was Pomegranate (Dalim in Bengali). She had a personal goal to help girls reach their potential, but passed on before she could bring this to fruition. Ayesha and Nicolas started talking and wove their dreams together and from that, the book club was born. Their primary goal is to bring the world of books to the youth in Popenguine. To date, the club consists of a small – but steadily expanding – group of avid readers aged from 15 to 20 years old.
